Sexuality: trend or taboo?

Whether on the radio, on television, on social networks, and soon on the curriculum of schoolchildren, sexuality is everywhere! Long considered a taboo subject, it's gradually finding its way into the media, but is the word really out?

We’re finally talking about it!

A question long avoided, bagatelle is now discussed on prime-time TV and radio, podcasts on the subject abound and a plethora of accounts are springing up on social networks, likeOrgasme et Moi, created by Charline Vermont, and followed by over 788,000 people on Instagram. A wide range of content and programs to answer questions, share experiences and demystify “the thing”. Even loveshops that used to be hidden behind large black curtains in certain neighborhoods are now open to the public. Such is the case of Passage du désir, which proudly displays intimate toys and lubricants in its windows. Gone are the days of the La Redoute catalog, where sex toys were found amidst back massagers. Nowadays, you can go loveshopping on your way home from work without any embarrassment.

The omertà on social networks

Shadow banning. Are you unfamiliar with this word? Sextech entrepreneurs know all about it. Orgasm, vagina, sex,… Use any of these words in your content and the publication risks being banned or not appearing in your subscribers’ news feed. You need to redouble your efforts to find ways of communicating, using emoticons for example, or slightly modifying your words. Pretty crazy when you consider that you can access a porn site in seconds, no matter what your age! In its latest report, Pornhub revealed that France was the European champion in terms of connections to their platform, just behind the United States. So it’s essential to get the word out, and to create caring spaces that can inform people, especially young people, by answering their questions about sexuality.

A real trend among the stars

Across the Atlantic, sexuality and pleasure have become a real business for Hollywood stars, who appear on Late Night shows to talk about it. In 2016, actress Gwyneth Paltrow launched her Goop brand, and created a buzz with her delicately named candle “This Smells Like My Vagina”. A risky gamble, but one that paid off, as the entire stock was sold out in just a few days. The site also features a Wellness page with a wide selection of intimate toys, all endorsed by the star. Singer Lily Allen also associated her name with the famous Womanizer brand when she released the Liberty model. And let’s not forget Kourtney Kardashian’s gummies, for balanced vaginal flora, which promise a sweet pineapple scent…
